About 80 per cent of the 988 fishermen registered as voters for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election are assured of voting for the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate this Thursday.

Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) chairman Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim is confident of the support as the fishermen were grateful for the various assistance provided by the BN government.

"The federal government had built a fishermen's market worth RM200,000, upgraded landing jetties at Geting and approved about 170 traditional fishing licences," he told reporters at a casual meeting with fishermen at the LKIM Complex, Geting here today.

The Pengkalan Kubor by-election is a three-cornered fight between BN's Mat Razi Mat Ail, Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim of PAS and independent Izat Bukhari Ismail Bukhari.

It is held, following the death of incumbent Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar, of BN, on Aug 20.

Irmohizam said the government also provided a monthly living allowance of RM200, incentives for fish landing and house repairs for poor fishermen.

The Kuala Selangor member of parliament said LKIM planned to improve the economy of fishermen in Pengkalan Kubor, including making it a tourism hub for Thai nationals to enter and shop.

"This includes encouraging them to venture into the grilled fish, car park and chalet businesses as Pengkalan Kubor is situated close to Tak Bai, Thailand," he said.
