Barisan Nasional is determined to increase its majority of votes in seven polling districts in Pengkalan Kubor in the state by-election on September 25, according to the BN director for the by-election Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
He said the youth, wanita and puteri wings would be instructed to work harder to achieve the objective of raising the majority compared to that garnered in the general election last year.
“Our strategy is to win in our seven stronghold districts, including Simpangan, Jubakar Darat and Bendang Pak Yong, and we hope the majority of votes in these areas will be higher.
“We also want to win in the five polling districts unfavourable to the BN (where the PKR won in the last general election) or at least reduce the opposition’s majority,” he told reporters after visiting Awang Yusof, 75, a villager of Kampung Simpangan, here.
Tumpat Umno acting chief Datuk Rosdi Abdul Aziz accompanied Mustapa on the visit.
Mustapa said that besides the “ceramah” (talks), the BN machinery would engage in door-to-door campaigning.
“The women campaign workers will go from house to house. We have learnt that there are more than 7,000 households in the Simpangan polling district,” he said.
Mustapa reminded the BN election machinery to remain focused and not become complacent despite PAS being seemingly fragile at the moment.
“Towards the end of the campaign period, they may storm Pengkalan Kubor. They are now busy with the PAS Muktamar (general assembly) in Johor,” he said in reference to the 60th PAS annual general assembly in Batu Pahat from September 18 to 20.
The by-election is a three-cornered contest among Mat Razi Mat Ail of the BN, Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim of PAS and independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary. It is being held following the death of the three-term assemblyman, Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar of the BN, on August 20.
Noor Zahidi had retained the seat in the general election held last year with a majority of 1,736 votes, beating Saharun Ibrahim of PKR and Izat Bukhary.
PKR has allowed PAS to contest the seat in the by-election. Polling is on September 25.
