More than 1,000 members of Umno Wanita machinery are gearing up for the campaign in the Pengkalan Kubor by-election in Kelantan to ensure the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) retain the state seat.
Its vice-chief, Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun, said Umno Wanita would be conducting house-to-house campaign to win the support of the electorate in the constituency.
She said the women wings from other Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties would also be joining hands with Umno to strengthen BN’s support during the by-election.

“This is to ensure that we reach every voter regardless of their political ideology so that the people will continue to support the BN,”she told reporters after opening the Sukan Rakyat in conjunction with the annual Pesta Rumbia held here yesterday.
Azizah, who is also an Umno supreme council member, is confident of a BN victory in the by-election as the government is proven to have given more benefits to the people in this country.
“God willing, BN will win, and in retaining the seat based development brought the government, and I’m sure people are able to judge,” she added.
Also present were Kuala Penyu assemblyman Limus Jury, and district officer Edmund Teo.

The Pengkalan Kubor by-election will see a three-cornered clash between the BN candidate, Mat Razi Mat Ail, Rosdi Wan Ibrahim from PAS and an independent candidate, Ismail Bukhary Izat Bukhary.

The Election Commission (EC) has set a 12-day campaign period and fixed polling on September 25.

The Pengkalan Kubor seat fell vacant following the demise of BN’s incumbent, Noor Zahidi, who died of liver cancer on August 20.

In the 13th general election, Noor Zahidi won the seat with a majority of 1,736 votes to beat the PKR candidate and an independent.

In other development, Azizah called on the state government and relevant departments to seriously consider introducing the planting of Rumbia trees on a commercial scale.

She said the flour extracted from Rumbia, locally known as sago, has great potential for exports overseas, which in turn, will elevate the income of the planters.
